The Evidence On Walking, Thinking And Work

Netwalking attracts a lot of confident claims, and some of them are not supported. This page separates what the research reasonably shows from what has been extrapolated from it — partly because accuracy is worth having for its own sake, and partly because the well-supported claims are more than good enough to make the case.

Where evidence gets thinner: energy and optimisation

Walking has a usefully specific evidence base: it can support open-ended idea generation under the conditions tested. That does not make every nearby claim about feeling sharper at work equally secure. “Energy”, “focus” and “optimisation” often collapse sleep, physical activity, workload, illness and subjective alertness into one promise. A wearable score, a supplement label and a clinical intervention are not three versions of the same evidence, and none follows automatically from the finding that people generated more ideas while walking.

The stronger ground is unglamorous. The U.S. physical activity guidance sets out evidence-based recommendations for regular movement, while MedlinePlus guidance on healthy sleep explains the basic role and habits of sleep. Those sources support attention to activity and sleep as broad foundations; they do not turn a midday slump into a diagnosis. Before reaching for an optimisation product, it is worth asking whether the basic problem is too little rest, too much sitting, an unrealistic workload or something that needs medical assessment.

Beyond those basics, the question has to become more exact. Which intervention? Studied for what purpose, in whom, and against what comparison? Consumer devices display patterns derived from selected measurements, but their scores are still estimates. Supplements and clinical treatments raise different questions again, including interactions, contraindications and whether a symptom has an underlying cause. A confident umbrella claim about “energy” is therefore less informative than a careful account of what was actually studied.

Treat movement and sleep as foundations, treat device outputs as prompts rather than verdicts, and take persistent or concerning changes in energy or alertness to a licensed clinician. A business blog can help separate kinds of evidence. It cannot decide what a symptom means or whether a clinical intervention is appropriate for one person.

Walking and idea generation: well supported, and specific

The most directly relevant work is Oppezzo and Schwartz, Give Your Ideas Some Legs, published as a research report from Stanford University. Across four experiments, participants completed standard psychological tests of creative thinking under different conditions — seated, walking on a treadmill indoors, walking outdoors, and, in one condition, being pushed outdoors in a wheelchair to separate the effect of movement from the effect of being outside.

The findings, stated carefully:

  • Walking substantially increased performance on a test of divergent thinking — generating many varied uses for an object — with the large majority of participants scoring higher while walking than while seated.
  • The effect on convergent thinking, where problems have one correct answer, was much smaller.
  • The boost was not solely an outdoors effect: it appeared on an indoor treadmill facing a blank wall.
  • There was a residual effect — participants who sat down after walking still performed better than those who had only sat.
  • In the fourth experiment, walking outdoors produced the most novel and highest-quality analogies of any condition.

The practical translation is narrow and useful. Walking helps with open-ended, generative thinking, and helps less with closing things down. That is exactly the shape of a good netwalk conversation, and exactly the shape of a good walking brainstorm. It is not a general claim that walking makes people better at their jobs, and it should not be presented as one.

Physical activity: strong evidence, but a different claim

That regular moderate physical activity is beneficial is about as well established as anything in public health. The WHO physical activity fact sheet sets out the adult recommendations — a substantial weekly amount of moderate-intensity activity, of which brisk walking is a straightforward example — and the UK Chief Medical Officers' physical activity guidelines give the equivalent national framing along with guidance on reducing sedentary time.

A monthly or fortnightly ninety-minute walk is a real but modest contribution to that. It is honest to describe it as a pleasant side effect of the format. It is not honest to describe a business networking walk as a health intervention, and nobody organising one is in a position to make claims about anybody's health.

Side-by-side conversation: plausible, less formally measured

The claim that walking side by side changes the character of a conversation — less self-monitoring, more tolerance of silence, easier disclosure — is widely reported by people who do it and is consistent with well-established findings about eye contact and cognitive load. It is fair to describe it as the accumulated experience of practitioners plus a plausible mechanism.

It is not fair to cite it as though a controlled experiment on business networking conversations exists. As far as the published literature goes, this remains the least formally tested part of the case, and the honest framing is "this is what people consistently report, and here is why it is likely".

What is commonly overstated

Four claims circulate widely and should be treated with caution:

  1. "Walking meetings are more productive." Too vague to be true or false. The evidence supports better generative thinking, not better productivity in general — and for meetings that require documents or records, walking is clearly worse.
  2. "Walking outdoors is dramatically better than indoors for creativity." The Stanford work found the walking effect indoors on a treadmill too. Outdoors added something in the analogy task, but the movement itself is doing much of the work.
  3. Specific percentage boosts quoted without their conditions. Figures from a particular test under particular conditions get repeated as though they described creativity in general. They describe scores on a specific instrument.
  4. "Networking walks generate more business than networking meetings." There is no serious evidence either way. What can be said is that some people who avoid indoor networking entirely will attend a walk, so the comparison is not like for like.

Why understating it is the better strategy

There is a practical reason to keep the claims tight beyond mere honesty. Netwalking is competing for time against formats that make loud promises, and the loud promises are precisely what makes people sceptical of all of them. The modest version of the case is unusually robust:

  • Movement measurably improves the kind of thinking that exploratory business conversation requires.
  • Side-by-side conversation lowers social pressure, and people consistently report saying more useful things.
  • Regular walking is good for people, which the seated alternative is not.
  • Some people will come to a walk who will never come to a room.

All four are defensible. None requires exaggeration. That is a stronger position than a bigger claim that a sceptical attendee can dismantle on the second corner.

If you want to go to the source rather than to summaries, the Stanford paper linked above is short, readable and free, and it is a good example of how much narrower a published finding usually is than its popular version. That gap — between what was measured and what gets claimed — is worth keeping in mind for anything you read about walking and work, including this page.
